Infield Fly Rule

The infield fly rule prevents the defense from intentionally dropping an easy pop-up to turn a cheap double play. It applies with runners on first and second or bases loaded, fewer than two outs, and a fair fly ball that can be caught with ordinary effort.

Examples

  1. Runners on first and second, one out. Batter hits a high pop-up to shortstop — the umpire declares 'Infield Fly, the batter is out.'

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Does the ball have to be caught?

No. The batter is out regardless of whether the ball is caught.

  • Can the infield fly rule apply to the outfield?

Yes. If an infielder can catch the ball with ordinary effort, even on the outfield grass, the rule applies.
